The third party alternative

There is an alternative to installing EDI and purchasing the scan pack equipment necessary to carry out the
B2B e-Trading process; and that is to deliver merchandise by using a specialist Third Party Logistics Provider.

Such companies have operational scan pack equipment installed which meets the B2B e-Trading standards and they are also capable of receiving EDI, either directly on behalf of the supplier, or a carbon copy of the EDI order transmitted by the retailer to the supplier in the normal way.

In theory, therefore, it is possible to set up and deliver to the B2B e-Trading requirements without any capital expense whatever. These companies will charge suppliers a negotiated rate per unit of merchandise depending on the services the supplier requires to be carried out.

For example, these companies will receive EDI orders, have finished merchandise delivered into them on behalf of suppliers, produce the appropriate tickets, ticket the merchandise, hang it on the correct hangers if need be, sort it by store, scan it into bags or cartons, affix the Shipping Container Marking (SCM) labels, and send the Advance Ship Note (ASN). In other words, carry out the whole B2B e-Trading process.

If required, most of these companies can arrange a range of additional services, including pressing, quality assurance, relabelling, re-ticketing, permanent warehousing, bonded warehousing and transport.

Details of companies who have already met the requirements of the B2B e-Trading are set out overleaf. It must be emphasised that we. do not have any direct arrangements with any of these companies and are not involved with any of the negotiations.
